Read the passage and answer the given subquestions. I was born in the city of Bombay - once upon a time. I was born in Doctor Narlikar's Nursing Home on August 15th, 1947, at night, close to the stroke of midnight. The narrator says his birth coincided with India's independence, and newspapers celebrated his arrival. His father was hit by a bicycle and the narrator later reflects that this accident was a mere trifle beside the larger fate that had befallen him. He admits that his life is tied to the destiny of India, that his crumbling self has swallowed too many lives, and that he must swallow the lot as well. Consumed multitudes are jostling and shoving inside him, guided only by the memory of a large white bedsheet with a blue hole in the centre, a talisman from which he begins remaking his life.
